After a standoff with police, an armed suspect who had taken his wife hostage and barricaded himself inside a Puna home surrendered to authorities Tuesday.

Shortly before 9 a.m., Puna officers responded to a call of an armed man in a home on Ahi Avenue in the Eden Roc subdivision. One of the suspect’s relatives, who had managed to exit the house, said a 55-year-old man was preventing his wife from leaving and was armed with multiple weapons.

Hours of negotiations ensued. The suspect surrendered to police at about 3:35 p.m., and the wife was not harmed.

Police arrested 55-year old Jeffrey K. Canabantan. He is being held in the Hilo police cellblock while detectives continue to investigate the incident.
